Bart Finzel has held the position of vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean since March 2015. A member of the Morris faculty since 1989, Finzel also served as interim dean from 2011–15. He earned a bachelor of arts at Valparaiso University as well as a master of arts and doctorate in economics at Cornell University. Finzel is a winner of the 1999 Horace T. Morse - University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education and the 1999 UMM Alumni Association Teaching Award.
During his tenure as dean, Finzel has enlivened discussion of the meaning of the liberal arts at a public institution by establishing the Founders Scholars program. In partnership with the Office of Grants Development and the Rodney A. Briggs Library, he initiated the now-annual Celebration of Scholarly Accomplishments. With faculty colleagues in the Division of the Humanities, Finzel also worked to implement Writing for the Liberal Arts. With support from the University of Minnesota’s Office of Equity and Diversity, he has championed the pre-doctoral fellows program, which brings late-doctoral faculty of color to the Morris campus to enrich its culture and curriculum. An active member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges, he also has represented Morris at the national level.
