Morrison Gallery Current Exhibition

The University of Minnesota, Morris Edward J. & Helen Jane Morrison Gallery presents APPed Metaphors: tablets, phones, and the studio artist, beginning Thursday, January 21, at 7 p.m. Curated by Assistant Professors of Studio Art Anne Barber and Gary Wahl, the exhibition includes work from 26 regional and national artists working in a broad range of modes and materials, including photography, video, painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking.

Including a broad range of practices from the traditional studio to emerging digital environments, this exhibition examines the many ways that artists have found to integrate tablets and smartphones into their studio practices. Whether they are making hand—built clay vessels using centuries—old techniques or writing code to drive interactive sculpture, the common denominator is that apps play an essential role at some point in each artist’s creative process.

Curators Barber and Wahl selected the work to reflect not only the range of artwork submitted, but also the many ways that artists have adopted and adapted these new tools into their artistic lives.

Samuel Johnson, a ceramics artist based in Saint Joseph writes, “I build these jars upside down on a wheel. I use my phone to photograph the jar through the forming process. I flip the image (180°) to better see the merging form as it is being made.”

Artist Amanda Wallace, who uses free apps on her phone to make quick portrait studies of identity, adds, “I have become an ‘other’ self: a self that I felt comfortable only displaying through social media platforms (namely, Instagram and Facebook), rather than in real life.”

APPed Metaphors continues through Friday, March 11. Gallery hours are Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–8 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m.–6 p.m.; and Saturday, 1 p.m.–4 p.m. The Morrison Gallery is located on the campus of the University of Minnesota, Morris.
