This fall, the University of Minnesota Morris will welcome Alan Shapiro as its Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Liberal Arts.
Shapiro is professor emeritus of English and creative writing at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He will teach a two-credit course titled "Poetry and Style" and deliver a public lecture as well as participate in other campus events including classroom visits and discussions.
Shapiro’s lecture will be on Sept. 13 at 11:40 a.m. in the Science Auditorium. This event is the first in a series of lectures in fall semester sponsored by the Honors Program called, "Montaigne Made Me Do It: On Pattern & Variation." The lecture is open to all and will be followed by a question and answer session.

ABOUT SHAPIRO
Since 1995, Shapiro has taught at the University of North Carolina, where he currently serves as the William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of English and Creative Writing. He has published more than ten books of poetry, including Life Pig (2016); Reel to Reel (2014), a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize; Night of the Republic (2012), a finalist for the National Book Award and the Griffin Prize; and Old War (2008), winner of the Ambassador Book Award. His most recent book is Proceed to Exit, and a new book, By and By, is due out next year. Shapiro has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, won the Kingsley Tufts Award, the Los Angeles Book Prize, and a Lila Wallace–Reader’s Digest Writers’ Award.
